太长不看版:我们完整制作了《寒蝉鸣泣之时》系列,包括 Studio Deen(2006-2013)和 Passione(2020-2021)制作的全部相关动画作品。我们选用了画质最好的 2016 年发售的 480i 蓝光原盘(十周年纪念版)作为前两季度的片源。以下详细。
首先简单介绍一下前两季的蓝光版本(或许很多观众已经知道了):2014 年发售的初版蓝光画质是出了名的差——带着残留的拉丝劣质拉伸到 1080i,可以说是修复无望——以至于成了在高清爱好者中流传的一个梗,作为“蓝光比 DVD 还差"的典型例子时常被提起。虽然新世纪初的很多动画都有类似的问题,“寒蝉"却是其中非常幸运的一个——在 2016 年重制发售的 480i 蓝光中,没有劣质拉伸,当然也没有了被拉伸的残留拉丝,画面整体也比 DVD 要干净不少。
对于前两季(无印和“解"),我们将源经过 IVTC 和反交错处理,色彩空间转换至 BT.709 标准后,使用 NNEDI3 拉伸到了 720p。在选择拉伸算法时,我们比较了四种不同的基于神经网络的超分辨率算法,发现还是古老的 NNEDI3 结果最佳。近些年的新超分辨率算法,例如 Waifu2x,会选择性地识别较细的线条并将其锐化描黑,而对于较粗的线条不做处理,反而加剧了片源中线条粗细不均匀的问题。在做了其他常规性处理(抗锯齿、去色带、去晕轮)的同时,我们还进行了轻度的收线和线条描黑,并仔细调整了描黑的强度,在线条较浅处更强,让线条看起来稍微均匀一些。(截图 1-8 组)
对于“猫杀篇"OVA,我们使用了 DVD 作为源。预处理和前两季基本相同。
对于第二季“解",我们选择将每集结尾的下集预告部分制作为和正片相同的 24 fps,避免了 24/60 fps VFR(可变帧率)。为此,我们将画中画部分切割出来做场匹配,并手动绘制了蒙版对外框部分做反交错。在“解"的前两集的下集预告中,线条有非常严重的抖动问题,我们针对性地对这两段进行了时域稳定处理来缓解。
从“礼"开始终于有 HD 制作的蓝光片源了。不过,这一部的线条清晰度在不同的场景中呈现非常不同的画风,可能是当年 Studio Deen 制作的普遍问题。我们试图修复了其中过于锐利的线条锯齿以及晕轮,并大力清除了这一部较重的色带。此外,我们还在第一集发现了一个在 720p 分辨率下带着拉丝被拉伸上来的镜头(!),我们通过缩小后反交错再拉伸针对性地修复了这一个镜头。(截图 9-10 组)
“煌"的蓝光原盘质量要比“礼"要好一些。我们只做了常规性的抗锯齿、去色带和去晕轮处理。
“扩"从来没有发行过蓝光,所以我们又用回了 DVD。预处理和第一季基本相同,唯一不同的是我们用上了两轮去晕轮滤镜组合才把线条周围超宽的光环清理掉。(截图 11-12 组)
新出的两季度动画“业"和“卒",全程都可以几乎完美地逆向双线性拉伸还原为 864p。我们随后利用 NNEDI3 重构为 1080p,并加上轻度的常规抗锯齿和去晕轮来清理残留的问题。
为方便比较,以下源的截图与成品分辨率不一致时,都是在做了 IVTC 和反交错以及色彩空间转换后以 Spline36 拉伸到了和成品相同的分辨率。
TL;DR: We have completed the series of “Higurashi no Naku Koro ni", including all the related anime works by Studio Deen (2006-2013) and Passione (2020-2021). For S1 and S2 (“Kai") we used the 480i Blu-ray released in 2016 (10th anniversary edition) as source which appeared to be of the best quality. For details, read on.
First, a brief note on the Blu-ray editions (many of you might already know): the first Blu-ray of S1 and S2 released back in 2014 was notoriously bad – low quality upscaling to 1080i WITH residual combing is pretty much hopeless to fix – it became a meme and has been frequently brought up as an example of “Blu-ray release that's even worse than the DVD". While this is a common issue for many anime titles in early 2000s, “Higurashi" is a lucky one that later received a remaster and a new 480i Blu-ray release in 2016 – no more upscaled combing, no ugly upscaling artifacts, and the image is also cleaner in general compared with the DVD.
For S1 and S2 (“Kai"), source is upscaled using NNEDI3 to 720p after IVTC and deinterlacing, with primaries and matrix converted to BT.709 standard. For upscaling, we compared four different neural network-based super-resolution filters, and it turned out the good old NNEDI3 gives the best result here: modern super-resolution filters, e.g., Waifu2x, are trained to recognize sharper lines and tend to thinning and darkening them, while in here they would leave out the thicker lines, thus worsening the inconsistency of line art in the source. Among other routine fixes (anti-aliasing, debanding, deringing etc.), we have also applied slight line thinning and line darkening. Care has been taken in adjusting the line darkening strength to make it stronger in thicker/weaker lines and less to none in already sharper/darker lines, to make the line art appear a bit more uniform. For the “Nekogoroshi" OVA, we used the DVD as source. Preprocessing is similar as S1 and S2.
For S2 (“Kai"), we chose to make all the preview (“yokoku") sections at the end of each episode the same 24 fps as the main part instead of 24/60 fps VFR. This involves cropped field-matching and masked deinterlacing. We have also tried to stabilize the severe jittering of line art appeared in the preview sections in the first two episodes of S2.
For “Rei", there are finally real HD Blu-rays. However, line art appears to be very inconsistent across scenes in terms of sharpness, in line with several other anime works by Studio Deen around the same time. We tried to fix the overly sharpened and ringing line art as well as the heavy banding problem appeared here. We have also fixed one combed cut (!) in episode 1 with revert upscaling and frame blending. (Screenshots pair 9-10)
For “Kira", the Blu-ray source quality is generally better than “Rei". Only routine anti-aliasing, bebanding, deringing applied to this one.
For “Kaku Outbreak", there was never Blu-ray released, so we had to use DVD again. Preprocessing is the same as S1, plus an additional 2-pass deringing filter combo to get rid of the extremely wide haloing around the line art. (Screenshots pair 11-12)
The latest two seasons of new anime, “Gou" and “Sotsu", are near-perfectly descalable to 864p using the bilinear kernel. We then re-scaled it to 1080p using NNEDI3, and applied slight anti-aliasing and deringing to clean up the residual issues. (Screenshots pair 12-15)
The source screenshots below are upscaled using Spline36 after IVTC and deinterlacing plus color space conversion in case they're of different resolution as the encode, for easy comparison.
